ZAG Heartbeats: Jump For Joy! We Just Turned One!
It happened in a flash of inspiration for Steve Curtis.
The CEO of ZAG Group was attending a retreat at Hollyhock’s Social Change Institute.
What if 1% of ZAG’s profits are invested in philanthropy? What if the 100 people who work here express their caring and contribution by giving joy, attention, and caring to another human being, anywhere in the world?
It wasn’t long before ZAG HEARTBEATS pulsed to life. Made up of a dedicated internal group at ZAG, volunteers select local, national and international charities to support. This philanthropic initiative challenges others to take action, and become a positive force of change in our local communities and in the world.
ZAG HEARTBEATS has funded children’s programs that provide services such as healthy food, music, mentors and more.
“Thank you so much for your donation of $15,000 in 2015 to the Saint James Music Academy! Your gift is inspiring a generation of young musicians and supplying the tools for a lifetime of achievement. Through the transformative power of music they are growing in self-confidence, and realizing their own great potential. There are about 200 children and youth who come to learn music and in the process become role models for their families and communities.” – Vancouver’s St James Music Academy
We asked our members to share with us what it has meant to them to be part of ZAG HEARTBEATS:
Denis Varga, Operations:
“Once the Heartbeats initiative was created at ZAG, I jumped on board with a feeling of pride and a feeling of belonging to a cause that matters to people.”
Sarah Fletcher, Office Manager:
“Heartbeats opened my eyes to some of the pressing issues that require our attention. We actually have the important conversations pertaining these issues, which allows us to be a part of the long-term solution. I’m excited to see where Heartbeats goes in the future, and to watch the positive impact that we’ll have on the Heartbeats of this world.”
Louisa Davis, People, Performance & Culture:
“Giving back is a driving value for ZAG’s culture. The generosity and ingenuity evident at ZAG Heartbeats is very much what we’re all about. Every business venture we undertake, makes the world a better place.”
Sharon Davis, Facilitator for HEARTBEATS:
“It’s an honour and privilege to work with such a passionate and committed group of volunteers giving their time and resources to make their community and the world a better place.”
Richard Wibisono, Production Planner:
“It turns out that not only I can make a valuable contribution, but I also learned so much by doing so. I feel blessed to be a part of such a knowledgeable committee. It was especially memorable and heartwarming for me to see the happy smiles in the faces of the kids we helped!”
Michael Gorczynski, Sales:
“Being a part of Heartbeats helps me understand the importance of giving in life. It allows me to invest part of my time into our future through initiatives involving youth, nature, education and nutrition. To me, Heartbeats is a great example of complementing a profit-driven business with a powerful charitable component.”
Nailia Minnebaeva, Social Media:
“What I love about being a part of ZAG Heartbeats is the invaluable opportunity to contribute to making a difference on a global scale! This heart-based initiative creates a noticeable ripple effect in various aspects of civil and individual empowerment, pushing the envelope of organizational and corporate giving initiatives as well as social responsibility.”
Scott Maxwell, Business Analyst:
“Heartbeats has changed the way I view charitable giving, I was never the type of person who believed giving someone something would ever help them. Heartbeats has shown me that charitable giving doesn’t have to be that, it can be a helping hand lifting you up. It can be an education, a meal, a safe space when it’s needed to get back on your feet. Heartbeats has allowed me to believe that we can change the world, and use the profits that I help generate to do it.”
Here are some of our recent contributions and partnerships in the local and global communities:
ZAG Heartbeats donated $10, 000 to support heroic grassroots campaign – Vancouver for Nepal led by Shenpenn Khymsar to help support and rebuild communities after Nepal’s devastating earthquake.

Anthony Robbins has based his professional life on this one principle:
“Connect to something greater than yourself – the secret to living is giving.”
ZAG’s organizational culture reflects this principle, and we challenge other companies to do the same.
Consider the impact of this one idea.
Imagine what the world would be like if EVERY business in North America dedicated 1% of their profits to international organizations that were making the world a better place…
Wouldn’t you like to be a part of that company?
